Lotus Elan

Ford engine block ID ?

PostPost by: lotocone » Wed May 22, 2024 7:30 pm

Hello all, I'm trying to see what block I might have. It has a 4K19 in the left side of the casting and T3 on the plus Ford on the right side. I have read that 6015 would be shown on a Ford block but it's not there.

There is a TC water pump plate.

Wondering what I have to see if it has some value. It's been in my garage for years and I'd like to sell it.

Thanks ,
Bob

6015 is the ford part number for a block. it should appear low down on the left rear., if its been ground off you should see the marks from this. Lotus or Ford ground off the block type identification such as 120E that was in front of the 6015 number on some blocks but always left the 6015 number. However anything is possible and maybe the whole number was ground off occassionally by the factory or some subsequent rebuilder ground it off for some reason

cheers

4K19 is the date it was cast. Year-month-day of the month, so 1964, October 19 (letter 'i' is not used)

Rohan and Greg,

Thank you for your comments. The number on the lower left side of the block isn't visible. There isn't even a filed area on the block. At least I know it's a Ford block made in 1964.

Hereis a photo of the left side of the block. I don't see a number other than 4K19 which Greg said is the production date. Hope I'm not missing something.

Hard to tell from the photos with the paint and rust in the area but there appears to be some horizontal marks in the block and different surface finish in the lower left compared to the raw casting surfaces elsewhere. My guess is the Ford casting type number was ground of at some time for some reason.

If you want to identify the block type and probable origins the date says its probably a 681F block. Does it have the press in oil pick up ? Also measure the block height to determine if its a 1500 or 1600 cc height. Is there the L in the inlet side mounting boss and does it have any stamping on the front face with the Lotus wall thickness codes i.e. LA or LB or LAA. Where is the engine number and what does it say ?

cheers

A 1964 production block can’t be a 681F and can only be a 1500cc block (or bored out a bit from 1500cc for Lotus application) if it has five main bearings.

As Rohan pointed out earlier though - unusual for a cast finish to exist on the LHS lower rear corner where the block casting identification should be. A ground finish existing where the numbers once were is to be expected but a virgin cast finish with no numbers? - that is very unusual. Perhaps have a closer look at this area of the block.

Sorry I remembered incorrectly that it was 1968 not 1964 and was to lazy to look back at previous posts in the thread  So probably a 120E block if 1964 with screw in oil pickup.

Thanks for your comments guys! After some cleaning, I still can't find a part number where it should be.

It seems like I have a 1500 block to me, if so, does it have some value? i'm moving to another place and don't want it if the value is low. I don't have an Elan as of a few years ago. Sold it to a Lotus friend.

There is no L on the block. There are 5 crankshaft bearings. It seems to have rope/string on the remaining half of the front cover so I think it it had a screw in dip stick tube. The thickness is about 7.9 inches.

Thanks for any further information. I added some photos.

Does it have an engine number stamping on the pad above the RHS engine mount? This may help to identify whether it was originally fitted to a Ford or Lotus.

No, there isn't any number stamped into the right hand side of the block. I seem to have a very unusual Ford block.
