Lotus Elan

N American based oil filter qualitative

PostPost by: h20hamelan » Sat Dec 02, 2023 5:07 am

I haven’t cut them open, or sent any filter material to be dissected under any analysis.
Rather, bought one of everything available. While I normally go for Baldwin, or expensive Wix. The Mann and Mahle look good but $4 more. Napa has started this ProFormer which is a good line typically.
The KN 2005 was the most expensive $14 and weighed 380g. Part of that weight is the nut.
Mann 719/12 was 360g and $15
Mahle 264 at 340g and $15
Wix 1393 (NAPA) was 325g and $10
2nd Wix 21393 (NAPA -Proformer)310g and $6 (best value I figure) Lots of info about 20 microns. Same company as Mann
Baldwin 178 310g and $10.50
Napa ProSelect 21342 (made offshore) 280g $6
Fram 2870 270g $7

Maybe I should cut some open, but I can’t imagine what I find will be worth it

You've missed that best filter imo, the mobile 1 205a (?). Available from Walmart at reasonable price.

I haven't done the research my self but all the YouTube videos where they do various tests and cut them open they tend to come out top or close.

True, not available in Canuckleland. Well, err, can order from my suppliers, but months away.

$30 in CDN$ at Walmart in U$A

Aside note on U$A vs CDN expenses.
As I collect many auto-parts from the good old US of A, sometimes I go to a big city like Spokane.
Generally, the parts, oil, shop consumables are marginally less expensive in the South. Not always, once exchange and taxes are paid. Recently a wheel bearing for one of the many trucks was $600 here, and $300 there.
Take a box of Kraft Dinner. $1 in Canada in CDN funds, and $1 in USA in U$A money, or $1.40 CDN.

I was sort of shocked to see the $30 for that filter. I suppose if I ever get racing, I will keep the Mobil1 in mind and will post back if they become available at a reasonable price.

Mobil 1 and a few others appear to source their filters from Mann. Mann supplies most of the European OEMs.

I was paying around $12 US+taxes for them I think. But they did have limited availability. Often picked up a few when in a random Walmart passing through somewhere etc.

I can believe they are made by mann or similar. They seem to be made to a different specification to the much cheaper options even made by same manufacturer.

Well worth watching a few or the videos on you tube where they cut them open and also test them. There is a lot of variability in the filters and quality level is not away connected to the price.

Would love to find the equivalent mann or other branded filter that might be available in the UK.

Ah yes, Fram. A pity it's so common. Fram and Mobil 1 available at Walmart at a discount, how good could they be? I've only had two engines open: a Ford 3.8 V6 (gasket) and my twincam. Neither on showed much wear. A steady diet of Mobile 1 and Fram I think! Ferrari uses Fram. Do you really think they have a whole separate manufacturing line just for Ferrari?

They are too smart, they pay Donaldson or Baldwin to put fram on after it is built

Mobil 1 are good. They are made by Mann of Germany. M1-205 I think.

Agree. It took a few hundred miles before the oil changed color when using them which was a lot longer than other filters.

At least Wix represented here

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pwYQWFd4UDA

No Donaldson
No Baldwin, though Baldwin may be Wix in some filters.

Those videos don’t really tell you much. The extent of those guys claiming to be engineers is probably that they happen to twirl a few spanners on the weekend and also earn a bit of extra cash from YouTube. In fact the original filter has no drain back or bypass valve. The bypass valve is built into the pump and the filter on these Ford engines don’t require a drain back valve because they hang vertically. I fit Australian RYCO Z62 filters as they most closely match the original spec. and are a specific fitment for this engine only and no others.
