Hi guys just starting to work on my engine and noticed that the chain tensioner appears quite short only about 5mm of thread left, is that normal or do i have to change the chain?

Does your timing chain currently rattle?
Yes your chain chain/tensioner and pads are obviously worn and you will need to eventually do something about it but I wouldn't change or do anything if it doesn't rattle. Just wait until it does.
However if you are doing an engine rebuild then obviously you would replace as necessary.
Alan.

My engine was rattling, tensioner as far in as yours.
The cause was a too short or aged piston spring.
The new spring gave almost 1/2 in more preload, the old one hardly showing out of the piston. The assembly was not an original one.
That is on the next picture.
