Starter motor on 711M block

Hope this is an easy one...

I have a note, but cannot read my own writing concerning starter motor for a 711M block concerning fitment.

Is the position of the starter motor the same for pre and crossflow? In my note I have the words 'cut off third bolt' and not a clue why I wrote it...)

In short, I am using a 711M block, long stroke 6B2D crankshaft, standard flywheel and ring gear. There should not be any issues bolting in my pre-crossflow hi torque starter motor, no?

The later Ford starter motors were three bolt mounting flange. They are interchangeable in my experience.
It's a bit tight in that area on an Elan and sometimes the third bolt hole/flange will foul on the chassis.
On an original bellhousing there is of course no third hole.

I use a later 3 bolt Bosch preengage starter from Ford Escorts fitted with a 9 tooth pinion on both my Elan and Plus 2. I cut off the lug for the third bolt to provide clearance with the body.

I vaguely remember now - it was following a thread where this was the case. I made a hasty note on a post-it, but thought something else was involved regarding flywheel size. Maybe not. I shall continue as is!

I note you say that you are using a standard flywheel. Is that a 711M standard flywheel or a LTC standard flywheel?
They are different.

OK, thanks, you have helped jog my memory!
I have now worked out my writing! And yes, it is all about what flywheel and starter to use. So please let me start again:

I am using an un-decked 711M block for the new engine. This is to bolt onto a Lotus bell housing supplied by Alan Voigt with an internal centre thrust bearing.

Some comments in the past say that the 711M type flywheel can/does foul the bell housing and that I should use an original Twin Cam flywheel Is this correct please???

Now my note:
With a standard 6 bolt 2 dowel Lotus flywheel and clutch on the 711M, Do I need to change the starter motor???

In other words, is the ring gear the same for a Lotus standard flywheel and a 711M cross flow flywheel?

Suggest you don't use a 711M flywheel on a LTC. It's too heavy and the clutch pressure plate mounting bolt PCD will be incorrect for a LTC clutch. If you don't have an original LTC flywheel your best bet is to obtain a standard pattern steel replacement from Burton or QED.

I have, or will have soon, a standard twin cam flywheel !

I know it is lighter, but is it the same diameter?

Yes the diameter of the flywheels are the same. It is the pcd for the pressure plate that is different for the different clutches. You could use the x flow flywheel and lighten it. You could re drill for the twin cam pressure plate to fit. Your choices.

Thanks Lyn. If the diams are the same, then ergo the starter pinion c/l is common, so I do not know why I made a note of using a three bolt starter...

(I will be using a standard flywheel as QED can get them machined for a trigger. I am waiting several months for it to arrive though!
