Silencer mounting.

PostPost by: persiflage » Sun Jul 16, 2023 1:20 pm

I found a bracket in my box of bits which I’m convinced is the original fwd mounting for the silencer and an unusual rubber
(1972 Sprint, single box) Its similar to the one shown on SJ Sportscars parts pages and the holes in the small face line up perfectly with the holes in the boot floor.
Offering it to the car I can see no way that it will fit in with the after market stainless silencer fitted, no doubt why its in the box of bits.
Anyone out there in a position to post some pics of their silencer fwd mounting?

Thank you Phil.
That box appears to be sitting at pretty much the same place as mine, tight to fit a bobbin between box and bracket. Time to get out the cardboard design tooling.

Having never had a gearbox pipe support bracket I thought it was time to fit one. New Y piece, link pipe, bracket and associated hanging clamp sourced from a major UK supplier.
“This should be an easy job” … well, that was wishful thinking.
Even without the rear box connected the nearest I can get the hanging clamp to the bracket is between half and three quarter of an inch.
The engine and gearbox haven’t moved so I can only assume the angles in the Y piece and link pipe are not quite correct.
Time to cut up the cornflakes box again and practice my sawing and filing.

Phil,

Is that the only bracket on the silencer and if not do you by any chance have a photo of the other one too?

I had a sprint style silencer on my old S3 and don't remember it being as neatly attached. Iirc it had a kind of fabric strap arrangement, possibly at the other end (?)

Cheers,

Will

This is the rear mounting on the box (on my '72 Sprint):
