Head Hardness Testing

I understand the need to test a head for hardness but do not know what a satisfactory hardness value is. Where about on the head is the test done?

Can anyone advise?

Also is there somewhere in Melbourne that can do this for me?

Hi David

The hardest original heads I have measured are about 70 to 80 Brinnel. 50 is Ok... just . 30 to 40 is to soft. Modern new alloy heads are in the 80 to 120 range depending on heat treatment.

I test is a range of places top and bottom as it can vary over the head

I am back in Melbourne on 29/6 and have the required hardness testing equipment. Send me a PM and we can arrangea mutually suitable time
