Engine fan??

PostPost by: nomad » Thu Mar 02, 2023 3:13 am

The fan bolt circle for an Elan has got to be common to other Brit cars so am wondering if I can replace the heavy two blade steel fan with a plastic multi blade fan for reasonable money. MG? Triumph? ect?

I used the 8 blade yellow plastic fan from a Cortina for years. It needs to be spaced within about an inch of the radiator core. Only marginally more effective than the steel bladed fan.
There is no cure for Lotus, only treatment.

Hi Kurt,
Imho it would be better to remove and fit a Kenlow Fan with variable thermostatic control. When stopped in traffic it helps cooling much better.

You would have to be sure that any replacement blades that you bought were compatible with the size of the motors shaft. The earlier motor had a thinner shaft.

Leslie the op is talking about a fan blade on the water pump…

I’d recommend removing any mechanical fan as it is a load on the water pump bearing & going with an electrical fan forward of the radiator a La S3/S4 & Sprint.

Yes, an electric really makes the most sense. I've fitted them to other cars and was just looking at something temporary on this one. Water pump bearings are already loose and I don't think that a, heavy, likely out of balance, steel fan is doing them any good.

If the bearings have play don't drive your car anywhere or the metal Fan will "tripan" the Rad. Please don't ask me how i know

The bearings are not real loose but there is a little play there. Yes, Alan, I have enough radiator problems already! They are very expensive and I have two leaking.

I set mine up as a puller so it would not shadow the radiator out front. And I fashioned a rear duct to exit the blast below out of coroplast. Otherwise the rad dumps heat back onto the motor whence it came. It's funny any interference with moving parts (the pulley especially) will sculpt the duct to an exact fit. I'm not sure if these refinements help, but as long as I was doing it, I thought I'd try. JOhn
