Oil pump gasket?

PostPost by: Simmo78 » Mon Feb 20, 2023 3:18 pm

Good afternoon all,

I will shortly be looking to awaken a sleeping TC that has been partly stripped and rebuilt (water pump replaced, front & rear oil seals, fuel pump rebuilt and oil pump removed / refitted)
Last weekend in preparation I spun the engine over using the starter motor with the plugs removed…. Unfortunately there was no oil pressure.
I am therefore going to try the ‘Vaseline’ trick to prime the pump.
My question before I reach for the spanner’s is, is there any gasket / seal underneath the end plate?
Thanks in advance, Simmo.

It's a rubber oring under the cover. Should be fine to remove and refit.

I recall trying umpteem ways to raise pressure on the starter with plugs out, oil galleries filled, vaseline etc. on a TC but to no avail.

Someone far more knowledgeable that me told me just to start it 'it will be fine'. I did and hey presto the oil gauge immediately sprung into life.

Same here, only shows oil pressure when running.

If it's been laid up a while I pump oil in from the pressure sender take off to ensure pump is primed and oil at bearings.

I had thought about pumping oil in through the oil pressure gauge connection, in fact the more I think about it, the more inclined I am to give it a go, along with the Vaseline trick.

But at least my pump has Royal connections.

I was so busy cracking a funny, I forgot to write this.

If you remove the end plate from an oil pump, you should replace the O ring with a new one. The old one will never seal tight again. The O ring size is the same as the O rings on the misab plates for 40 Webers.

Secondly, I never bother with stuffing grease or vaseline in the oil pump any more, as sometimes it works and sometimes it does not. I just pump oil into the gallery, see picture, and start the engine. Fin

+1 just start the Engine. It's only an Engine with a lot of Ford basic parts.
It's not a F1 Engine lol

1700 posts since 2015. I know who has wasted more time. +1, 3300 posts !!!!! since 2008. I know who has wasted still more time.

The picture I posted of pumping oil into a gallery, was on an engine that had not been started for 15 years, and I was quite happy to waste my time doing so.

Just because for every year of your life you’ve gotten out of bed on the left hand side and never died doesn’t mean had you gotten out of bed on the right hand side instead you would have died!
