measuring deck height

Am I correct in assuming the upper surface in my photo is a reference to the crankshaft centerline for measuring the deck height? Thanks

I think if the bearing shells are half of the bearing circumference then the measurement from the cap seat is correct.

I thought what is commonly referred to as "deck height", at least from a builder perspective, would be the (small) distance between piston top when at TDC next to the bore (i.e. without intruder if applicable) and the top of the block (where the head gasket would lay)...

The block height would probably relate more to the bulk of the engine (in order to consider stroke etc...)

The "deck height" is normally the distance from the crank centreline, which is the main bearing split in the case of a twin cam, to the top of the block ( block deck). Note that one some engines such as the Lotus9xx engines the bearing split is not Parallel with the block top deck

The design dimension according to Ford tolerancing is 198.10 to 197.74 mm

The piston top at TDC to block deck dimension is sometimes also described as "deck height" .

The first deck height is required to calculate the second deck height once you know the piston compression height , rod length and crank stroke
