Rear Crankshaft Oil Seal

PostPost by: david.g.chapman » Sun Oct 02, 2022 3:17 pm

I will have the engine out this winter to look at the clutch and change the rear crankshaft oil seal.
Do I have to remove the sump or can the seal be replaced by just removing the flywheel?

Dave,

My engine is a 6 bolt crank 1968 S4. The oil seal is contained within a casting that bolts to the back of the block, but the lower edge of this casting seals onto the sump. It looks like it could be done without removing the sump, but I cannot remember the detail of how the sump joins to this seal retaining casting.

Hope this helps,

You need to remove the sump. The seal housing holds the sump seal and the sump bolts to i the seal housing. If you you can get it out and in with sump on you'll never get it to seal anyway.

Yes, I suspected as much. Thought I'd ask anyway.

The seal goes into the carrier from the engine block side and is held in place by a lip on the flywheel side. So not possible to remove the seal from the flywheel side in situ bolted to the block. You need to remove the carrier which requires removal of the sump in order to replace the carrier if you want it to reseal

cheers
