Timing chain tensioner problem

PostPost by: CG901 » Sun Aug 21, 2022 12:30 am

Hi All, need some advice. while reassembling the cams and timing chain in situ, I noticed I was missing the plunger/piston (see photo) placed first into the tensioner bore. I now believe it dropped into the timing chest but can’t see it. Is it possible it could drop past the timing chain and rest at the lowest part of the chest?
I must be losing it. Hopefully my last rebuild…..
Thanks

It would be impossible for the plunger to get past the timing chain quadrant if you have the timing chain installed on the cams, so you will have to look for it elsewhere. Obviously you could drop it in from the top of the head, but surely you would have noticed / heard it drop.

Under normal circumstances it can not drop through. However i once dropped upon a situation were a standard engine had been fitted with a tall block longer chain and the plunger was right out and at an angle ready from dropping out. Luckily the engine had not been run. If it had run there would have been some damage.
