Replace Rope Seal with Rubber Lip type?

PostPost by: Andy Hamblin » Tue Mar 01, 2022 12:55 pm

I had my twin cam engine rebuilt last year and its all good except for oil leaks at both ends from the crank seals. Its a rope seal at the rear.

It'll have to come out again, as the leaks are too serious to live with - is it possible to replace the rope seal at the rear with a rubber lip seal?

Many thanks. Is that all I'll need or are there other parts that will need changing to accomodate the 6 bolt sump?

You will need a seal housing and the seal of course. Both readily available from the likes of QED for £70 odd. The sump will be a nightmare. You will not find one under £350. There are some converted ones on ebay, but be careful as many were badly converted.

Many thanks, that's useful. Probably rules it out in reality.

Appreciate your help guys.

You will need a modified seal housing otherwise you will have to change the crank as well.
