Ignition Timing With Delortto Carbs

PostPost by: William2 » Wed Sep 15, 2021 4:43 pm

My car is a standard S4 with Delortto DHLA40 carbs. I have just been checking the ignition timing at idle using a strobe. It appears to be just short of the first timing marker i.e. about 8 degrees. Is that correct? If not, and I have to rotate the distributor a small amount which direction do you turn it for advancing and retarding? Thanks for any advice.

William,

Viewed from the top, the rotor arm rotates anti clockwise. To advance the ignition, you need to rotate the distributor body clockwise.

The published literature confuses crankshaft degrees with distributor degrees, so be careful. There are a number of threads on this. I am afraid I don't have the specific details for timing using Dellorto carbs.

I've always set the ignition timing on my cars to 10 degrees btdc which I find just fine for road use

I would not expect the Carb type to affect the ignition timing?
