Id rods?

PostPost by: jabingb » Wed May 19, 2021 4:09 am

Here are some pixs of some rods that I have probably had since the mid '70s and would like to know what they are. They all have the same casting number on the caps but 2 of the rod bodies do NOT have any discernible casting marks on the shank. Also note the two without shank casting numbers differ from the 2 that do by different shapes of the small end, one with a very pronounced protrusion, have no idea how it got balanced?

They look to be very short rods from the picture - possibly Anglia 105E / MAE

What is the distance centre of big end to centre of small end?
What is the width and diameter of the big end?

Approximate measurements using dial caliper early morning!
Small end dia ~ 1.000"
Large end dia ~ 2.085"
Rod length ~ 4.804" (closest small>big ~ 3.260)
Big end/cap width ~ 1.053"

I believe I understand what alterations occurred with these rods for better or worse?

The small of the rod 2nd from the right is probably close to what they were originally, the far right shows evidence of a small protrusion remaining and the final 2 on left have been ground down to almost concentric with the small end bore.

Again, how were were they balanced and then was their strength compromised, I fear the answer?

Those dimensions are as per a standard Lotus Twin Cam / Ford 1500 connecting rod.
They look like a set of Farndon steel rods. I'm inclined to agree with you. I don't like the manner in which those small ends have been balanced!

Hi
I also have a set of these rods, I obtained them from 4ways engineering kent in 1975. They came complete with a set of 83.5 Mahle forged Pistons from a BRM racing engine. The EN19 rods and pistons with the 1" pin are approved for racing as mentioned in the FIA Homologation 127/C/V 1965.

The little ends are all slightly different due to being balanced at both ends, you would have to measure yours to find out why they look so different!

Mine gave good service for 40 years and then I had to retire them due to a damaged & burnt first ring. Unfortunately I have not found an alternative forged piston with 1" pins and are now running GAF rods with CP pistons.
