Ignition timing

I need to set up the approximate timing (static) for my recently rebuilt engine. The cam cover is fitted and I have no intention of removing it to determine the firing stroke for No1. Finding TDC is obviously easy from the crank marks but confirming that No1 is ready to fire is a bit less obvious. I came across this on another post, is this correct?
“The next question is which cylinder is ready to fire... #1 or #4. Look
in the oil filler cap at the rear cam lobes. If the rear lobes are
pointing toward one another, #1 is ready to fire. If the rear lobes are
pointing away from one another, #4 is ready to fire.”

yes, when in front of the engine all shafts are turning clockwise in operation, so the cylinder about to go bang is the one that will open up the exhaust soon afterward (cams pointing opposite ways for cylinder 1 thus exhaust ready to open, so when cylinder 4 has lobes pointing towards each other this is the usual timing reference on cylinder 1)

Many thanks.
