Cylinder head bent causing cam bearing wear

PostPost by: Panda » Fri Dec 11, 2020 6:23 am

I am told by my engineer that the camshaft wear on my Europa twin cam is caused by a bent cylinder head. I believe that oversized cam bearings are not available. Is it a satisfactory solution to close the caps and line bore the tunnel, similar to the situation if the main bearings were misaligned?

Hi Alan
Yes perfectly possible to line bore the cam tunnels like you can a block by machining a little off the caps and then re-boring taking an absolute minimum off the head.

If the head has not been re-machined flat in the bent state it may be possible to straighten the head to realign the cam bores.

Thanks Rohan, I believe the head is unmolested. I do have a pretty decent torque plate which I will give to Garth at Repairs and Restorations in the hope of straightening it out. Any thoughts on that process?

Alan, Being a Europa, is it the extended cam that supports the alternator drive thats bent? If its that cam I would have though it more logical that rather than head bending, it would have worn one or more cam bearings out of round.

Hi Vaughan,
It's actually the exhaust side which is bent. There is some wear on the inlet cam back bearing and the cam has a chip on no.2 lobe so I think it is a throwaway job. I have a photo on my phone which I will send to you.

Alan,
Has your egineer checked to see that the camshafts are straight?

Hi John,
Cams are straight, but unfortunately the inlet cam has a chip on top of no 2 lobe
