Camshaft Sprockets

PostPost by: Apx » Thu Jun 30, 2016 5:08 pm

A silly question to most, but is there any difference between the sprockets, i.e.. one for inlet, one for exhaust?
have got some second hand sprockets that appears the same, teeth and marking are all the same.
Cheers Neal

Hi Neal, the sprockets are physically the same and interchangeable. The exhaust has the timing mark in a different place. I am sure it is mentioned in the workshop manual.
Cheers Lyn... :)

The exhaust timing mark is advanced one tooth compared to the inlet. The jackshaft sprocket is physically the same, but no timing mark.

So how do you actually tell them apart?

Sorry all,
Going through the books I've just found a reference that the exhaust side will have "ex" scribed on it. Althought exceedingly faint i have now found it on one... Now to sort the cam shafts out. Thanks for your replies i am re etching the sprocket for future reference.

The position of the dowel hole on the exhaust is about half a tooth different to the inlet. Yes the exhaust is normally marked with a scribed "Ex"

cheers

In my 40 years of T/C building, I have bought quite a few pairs of cams and gears, nearly all new. The cams have always been matched pairs. The sprockets have invariably had a line cut to mark the timing position, with two markings, 'IN' on one side, and 'EX' on the other. I grind off the unrequired marking to distinguish the fitted inlet and exhaust cams. I have always had to use offset dowels to get the timing exactly to the cam specifications. :)
