Engine to Bellhousing sandwich plate

PostPost by: englishmaninwales » Thu Apr 07, 2016 9:53 am

I'm close to starting a 4 to 6 bolt crank conversion.(I've given up trying to make the rope seals work!) I have all the components but I'm unsure if my single piece full height plate is compatible with the 6 bolt flywheel/crank end instead of using the two piece one? If not can the single plate be adapted buy cutting or do I need a new 2 piece one?

Second query is to confirm the flywheel is not dowelled to the crank?
Thanks

I have never measured it but I suspect the opening in the single piece plate does not fit over the larger hub and seal carrier of the six bolt crank but it should be possible to cut off the bottom section to provide the needed opening and match the top half of the later two piece sandwich plate. The bottom section of the two piece plate is a straight bolt in section after assembly ( it is not sandwiched) and can be easily made of a piece of aluminium sheet to add lightness :)

The six bolt flywheel and cranks do not require dowelling as they locate on the crank hub as a light push fit and use fitted bolts

cheers

The four bolt sandwich plate is dished, sadly I don't have a photo on it.

Is there a thread on doing a rope to lip seal conversion?

Along the line of Rohan, I have 4 bolt plates and a spare 6 bolt block, The 4 bolt dish will interfere with the 6 bolt aluminum seal holder on the upper side, but one should be able to cut the interfering bits away to provide clearance, I marked up one of the plates but haven't cut it yet, could find and take a pict. if helpful.

Turns out not far away, so here are pict's, and correction I said upper, - obviously meant lower section.
(Ps. you can see a Cortina gt head, but block and seal same style.)
Not sure if flywheels significantly different re clearances?
