Fuel consumption at idle

PostPost by: Mick6186 » Sun Mar 13, 2016 12:10 pm

Can anyone give an estimate of how long it takes to use a UK gallon of petrol at idle on a 1700 tall block. The engine has L14 cams with 1.625 inlet valves & 1.4 exhausts, running dellortos on big valve chokes & jets. The engine idles smoothly at 900 rpm,
Thanks,
Mick

Mick,

I don't know the answer to your question, but curiosity has got the better of me. Why do you need to know?

Between 1/4 and 1/2 of a UK gallon per hour.

The idle mixture and carb balance will have a huge effect on what end of the range your engine is, that said large valve duration and overlap is not conducive to efficient idle combustion.

Disconnect the pipe at the tank
Stick it in a container with the measured amount of fuel
Start engine
Start stopwatch.

You will need to be a little more precise
A. So that you don't set fire to your car and B. So that you get an accurate result

They look suspiciously like the stainless steel repro ones that I bought recently on E-bay after a posting here alerted me to them, they were very cheap and will do me fine but not for someone wanting originality.

I do hope that I am wrong.

Yup, I was just wondering what had happened to my posting about the trim rings

I blame the forum software, then my computer, then the keyboard and if none of them will accept the blame then just maybe its me having another senior moment!
