Crank thrust washer thickness

Hi, does anyone know the thickness of a standard crank thrust washer

You are repeating yourself Nic. :lol:
Why do you need to know the actual thickness of a thrust washer? Pop in your crank and new standard size TWs. Push to the rear whilst gently rotating, well oiled. The crank, not you! Measure up, and fit the size[s] that you need. Remember that the TWs do not have to be the same size both sides, and fit them the CORRECT way round. Grooved sides to the crank.

Yes, inadvertent repeat - apologies. The reason I want to know the thickness is as follows........ I have stripped the engine and measured the end float, I have also measured the thickness of the old thrust washers. I know from my measurements that I have too much end float so will need oversized washers. The engine has +.020 bearings so may well already have oversize thrust washers. I can't really see the point in buying a standard set of thrust washers which I know will be wrong, clearly I could make a stab at what I think might be needed, but that does not seem a very scientific approach. If I knew the thickness of standard washers I could, from my measurements work out exactly what I need to buy and not make a wasted purchase.

I will measure some up in the morning Nic and let you know, unless someone beats me to it.

Incidentally, your engine may have had oversized thrusts from new, depending how the crank was cut. Same for pistons, Lotus supplied some engines with +15s from new, depending on the condition of the bores when first cut. Anything was possible back then !

What else are you doing to your engine, and why the rebuild ? Any head work ?

Hi Leslie, thanks for that, it will be appreciated. I recently bought a +2 mid rebuild, so basically quite a bit of work done but lots of bits in boxes. The engine was stripped to the block as previous owner was going to replace w/pump. The head is now at Connaught Competition Engines, Sittingbourne where they are replacing valves, guides, seats, springs and a very light skim - all else is OK. I've measured the crank and that seems good and in spec, so just shells needed. The bore has been honed (by previous owner) and I will be measuring it tomorrow so it will either just be be new rings or possibly rebore and new pistons (current ones are std). I'll also replace oil pump, water pump and clutch when it goes back together.

New standard ACL thrust washers measure 0.092"

Let us all know how you get on with the build, and post up some pics, we luv em. One thing I notice you have not mentioned in your list, is engine balancing. It makes one hell of a difference to the feel of the engine, specially in a 4 cylinder. If you are not considering doing it, you should. Get the whole lot done too, including pistons and rods. Only costs about ?120, unless your shop does it for less.

Thanks Leslie, that's really helpful. I need to double check my maths as my measurements were metric, but it looks like I'm on oversize thrust washers already. Was wondering about balancing the engine, I don't really see me flogging the poor thing when it's back together but if the budget does not go sky night then I agree it's nice to do. Will post some pics as I get parts back.
