Engine Rpm surging

Gentlemen,
Finally got my +2 on the road. What a car!! I love how it drives!
Anyway,
It wasn't quite reving with a slight stumble at times so I removed the carbs to clean the float bowls.
I also reset the gap on the points as that was way bigger than the specified gap in the good book.
Now on start up the engine barely runs and then increases its RPM up to about 2000 then drops down to about 700 without me touching anything! It'll keep doing this for a few minutes.
I made the mistake of messing around with two systems so I'm not sure which is causing the problem.
Any ideas? I'm guessing it's an air leak at the carb "O" rings and I'm going to attempt to find some locally and refit them today.
Any input is welcome!

Update.
I managed to find some O rings locally that look about the right size. Fitting them seems to have cured the fault, so I'm guessing it was an air leak.
