Engine rebuild

Hi,

Just re building my twin cam and thought I hade detailed all of the components as to where they are fitted but after fitting the crank and thrust washer on the centre cap noticed in the parts bin another thrust washer and despite looking through two manuals cannot find a location for this one in the attached photo.
Can anyone shed slight on where it should go ?

Secondly the sprocket on the crank two of the teeth are worn but on the outer face, the teeth have no wear signs with no hooking etc. does it need replacing?

You say "thrust washer" implying only one, there are two thrust washers, one fitted on each side of the centre main bearing cap.
NOTE: they must be fitted with the bearing surface touching the crank or you will damage the crankshaft.
The chances are that you do need another sprocket but post a pic for more opinions.

Hi,
Check the crank end float and Jack shaft end float, I have seen sprocket damage caused by the chain running out of alignment.

Hi all,

thanks for the responses and I have fitted both thrust washers and checked the end float which is well within the tolerances. so I feel confident that the crank is all set up correctly.
Its just that I don't know where this other washer should go?

There should only two thrust washers fitted so if you have a third that is unusual. Has the centre main bearing cap possibly been modified to take an extra thrust washer so you have a complete circle rather than a semicircle on one side?

A bit hard to tell from the photo but I think I would replace the sprocket. The crank sprocket wears much more than the cam sprockets and routinely needs replacing during an engine rebuild. It appears to have measurable wear on all teeth plus a couple of teeth with significant extra wear for some reason.
