Has there ever been a block marked like this ?

Someone on our local auction sight has this up as a "Lotus" block.
I always thought the only cast "L" was the one contained within the engine mount holes, and only in later blocks.

Some earlier blocks had a smaller L on them in other locations, photos of a couple were posted here a while ago . This one appears to be a little unusual

i.e.

It has the Ford casting numbers ground off in Lotus style except for the last letter which appears to have been an L. I have never seen an L in this position at the end of the Ford casting numbers

It does not appear to be out of a twin cam with what looks like an original blue colour and an oil breather rather then the drain tube.

So don't really know what it is. It is worth money if it has good bore wall thickness and has not been bored to big already whether its an L block or not as there is nothing special about the L blocks..

Without a wall thickness survey its worth maybe 100 to 200 dollars if you want to take a bet on it being ok. With a survey depending on the results it could be zero or 500 dollars plus.

cheers
Rohan

Could be out of a Lotus; I see a number ending in 6 A stamped on the mounting boss. I don't know why they would change out only the center cap on an engine with the weaker caps all around.

Yes could have been a TC engine as it has no pin in the front main bearing cap (this is used to support the timing chain tensioner in a pre Xflow ohv engine) but not needed in a TC.
I have only physically seen one engine with that "L" in the exhaust side casting number and it came from an early Lotus Cortina, it also had the large "L" between the carb side engine mount.

I've got one sat in my garage that is waiting to be used and I seem to think it has a full Lotus engine code stamped above the engine mount. It also has the Lotus bore thickness grading on it on the front face.

Mines got five square caps on it though! :D
