Kelvedon cam re-profile - any experience?

PostPost by: dunclentdr » Tue Sep 16, 2014 8:18 pm

Kelvedon offer a service to re-profile the existing cam in an owner's engine - I am wondering about whether mine can be profiled to provide a little more power (? Sprint spec) and also if anyone has thoughts on or experience of this type of service?

David,

I am a little puzzled by "in an owners engine". A cam shaft needs to be removed from the engine in order to be re profiled, as I expect you know. It is a few years since I visited Kelvedon, but I don't think they had the facilities to carry out such work. I would expect the cam to be removed, sent to a company who have the specialised machine tool to carry out the work, and then refitted to your engine.

Whether it is wise to re profile a cam shaft or buy a new item to the spec you require I cannot say, but there have been some bad experiences mentioned with respect to re profiled cams.

Regards,

Regrinding a cam to get a different profile - eg higher lift or longer duration is common practice. It requires reducing the cam base circle diameter and there is a limit to what new profile can be obtained from the original cam profile while still maintaining an acceptable base circle and limiting the shim thickness increase. Kelvedon and most cam companies can advise you what is possible with the cams you have.

cheers

Thanks - clumsy language in the original post - wasn't implying it is done in-situ, rather that they use the original cam and re-profile!!

Kelvedon will just outsource it to someone else would be my guess

I went with QED and now have the QED420 cams and very very happy with the result, lots of low down power and great on the road

Interesting - did QED reprofile yours or did you buy replacements?
