Cam followers one thou OS on ebay

PostPost by: oldchieft » Mon Mar 31, 2014 12:01 pm

Hi all
I have seen this on ebay

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Lotus-twincam ... 3f32d42ea2

Quote
"This is a rare set of plus one thou oversize 0.001 cam followers. Unused, been on the shelf for some time but still in excellent condition. Ideal if you have minimal wear on your cam follower guides. "

Has anyone (Rohan again?) seen ones like these or used them?

I have heard that they existed but never seen or used them. No reason I am aware off not to use them if a 1 thou overbore restored your follower sleeves back to specification along their entire length.

I presume they are standard thickness and length cast iron followers with standard pad height on the inside where the shim rests and the only difference is the O/D. So suitable for a standard engine but probably not for a high lift cam installation

cheers

Thanks Rohan
As the cast-iron as scarce as rocking horse s*** I think I might go for them and get them moded to standard.

Probably easier and cheaper to bore the sleeves rather than cylindrical grind the followers. Unless your sleeves are brand new you will have some hourglass wear in them anyhow

Oh yes, they are brand new, and not sleeves.

SAS head running in the bore without sleeve.

Yes I remember now you got a new SAS head. I think I would spend the money and find a new set of followers to the correct dimensions to suit the build you are doing. Cast iron ones are still around but hard to find. There is nothing wrong with the steel followers if using cast iron cams on them. Its just steel followers on steel cams that can present problems.

I have an old style TC head, No steel liners installed either. I guess everything old is new again!

I had a head rebuilt by QED a few years back in which they ground the sleeves and supplied .001" oversized followers for just the exhaust side. At the time they also could supply both standard and .005" oversized CI sleeves.

The bidding is out of the range that I want to pay, if work is needed.

Rohan is certainly on the mark here. Trying to open the cam follower bores by 0.001" on a brand new head sounds like an open invitation to messing up the head unless you have a machinist willing to spend a lot of time and care setting up for the operation.

Yep
I would only polish a thou off the followers, not touch the head.

But I don't think I will be going there.

I may give up on cast iron and go with the steel ones as Rohan suggests.

Thanks Iain
Just the pointer I needed, the price at 96 pound for a set of 8 is reasonable in this day and age.

I wish I had seen this supplier before I bought my cams.

I have ordered a set.

Newman appear to have a good selection of useful cam profiles from what I can see - he rates his 280 / 420 and 280 / 443 as his phase 4 and 5 rating and not suitable for the road but with the rest of the engine setup right then a 280 degree cam is good for the road for an Elan ( or a Morgan!) IMHO. However his duration data column for these cams at 280 degrees does not match the 290 degrees of the timing data column i.e. 35 -75 = 290 degrees and 290 degrees is too long for a road engine

You also do not need to deepen the spring pockets for any of his cams with the right base circle, springs and valve set up

cheers

received a pair of 280/443 couple of weeks ago to replace an old pair of QED420 will measure the duration to see if they are 280 or 290. I've got to say had good service from Newman ground to order quoted 5 day delivery received them in 3 days. base circle is 1"dia so no problem with pocket depth.
