Oil Pump ,wish I'd never looked.

PostPost by: normand » Sun Feb 09, 2014 12:00 pm

As I was about to fit the oil pump to the block I noticed that the teardrop shaped hole in the pump which mates with oil return pipe to the sump was permanently blocked in the pump,it has never been drilled and looking at pictures of other pumps on Ebay this seems common. What is the point of the return pipe if it is blocked in the pump? Have I the wrong pump, my block is 120E 6015 with screw in oil pickup and the pump is replacement cannister type. What is going on ?.Help please.

New pumps for the last 20 years or so have had an internal relief and do not return the oil to the sump so what you have is normal these days

It seem's to me that returning the oil to the sump would be better. Less heat build up than a internal bypass. Guess there is no reason to refit the drain back tube then!

On the later engines with the press in pick up the drain tube also acts as a guide for the strainer head on the pick up. I would leave it there for that reason. On the earlier engines with the screw in pick up the return tube was not used I believe (at least I have not seen them present on engines I believe are unmolested) and the oil just dumped out the hole in the block.

The recycle flow is only a partial amount of the total oil flow through the pump so it does not recycle and heat up forever so it appears to not be a problem with the internal recycle.

My drain back tube on my S1 was still intact. Now redundant! Crank was 10 under so the engine was molested! :D

Have decided to remove drain tube as it is doing no good and if it drops out it will certainly do harm.!

Good idea - I always think about those tubes falling out!
Just remember to always fit the later type oil pump as if you fit the early type you may get bubbles in the oil due to the oil being dropped into the sump rather than being fed under the oil surface!
