oil level dipstick

Hiro,
The only disptick I know of that is correct for any Lotus T/C is the one that has the number 105E 6752B stamped on it where the oil level marks are. I guess your username of LCRJ refers to Lotus Cortina Register Japan? Rather fittingly the part number I quoted came from a Lotus Cortina Manual!
The one with the big loop looks like it fits an anglia 997, and the other looks like it's for a 1600 crossflow,
What numbers do both your dipsticks have?

Hiro,
Coincidentally I have been asking the same question of a friend. Between us we have three engines, all with the same dipstick 105E-6752B. However, there is still the question of the correct length of the dipstick tube, so that the dipstick is positioned correctly with reference to the bottom face of the block.
If anyone knows this dimension, then I would be able to set my oil level correctly

The Elan workshop manual ( page 26 Section E) quotes 4.1 inches from sump flange to top of tube compared to the Ford quoted number of 4.9 inches. I presume this is due to the Lotus dip stick tube being on a slightly greater angle going into the sump and so needs to be set lower to compensate but I have never checked that.
Lotus quote 7 1/2 imperial pints including filter versus the 7 imp pts for 1500cc cortina ( I presume this is the 4 bolt crank sump) and 7.2 imp pts for 1600 cc Cortina ( I presume this is the 6 bolt crank sump). Differences could be due to whether the Ford numbers include the filter capacity .
cheers
Rohan

My engine doesn't seem to have a tube fitted. The level in the dipstick using the correct quantity of oil goes above the U in FULL. When I first got the car I wondered why I was losing pressure on roundabouts if the level was even slightly below the full mark. I drained and replaced the correct amount of oil and found out why! I now use the "corrected" mark (above the U) and no more pressure loss. (See photo in earlier posting above)

My first car was a Cortina 1500 way back in 1963. It had a short oil filter bowl and the dipstick with a circular loop had 105E 6752 stamped on it.
In 1964 Ford dealers made available a "kit" which comprised a longer filter bowl and larger filter and also a shorter dipstick 105E 6752B.
This, of course, raised the oil level a little. All Mk1 Cortinas and Twin Cams that I've had since have used the later dipstick with the rectangular shaped loop.

Hi all,
Thank you for the all reply.
Now I have the oil level dipstick small loop one(lower).
The parts number is 105E 6752. Please have a look the photo.
I don?t have big loop one at the moment. The parts number must be 105E 6752B?
So 1964 Lotus TC engine must have big loop one(105E6752B)?
From a picture on Lotus Cortina and Lotus Elan parts list, the oil level dipstick have small loop.
The parts number on Lotus Cortina parts list is 105E 6752B. But the parts number on Lotus Elan parts list in not mention. Which one is correct for 1964 Lotus TC?
Hiro
P.S Yes, My username means refers to Lotus Cortina Register Japan!

In my last post I implied that 105E 6752 had a circular loop and that 105E 6752B had a rectangular loop. However, today, I checked my 1965 Cortina GT500 and my 1968 Elan 2. Both have the later, shorter dipstick 105E 6752B but the Cortina has the circular loop and the Elan has the rectangular loop.
This is probably the one you should use as it gives a slightly higher oil level.

Hi Norm
Just for clarity are the two dipsticks you have with the 105E 6752B part number but different handle styles actually different in length from the locating clip that fits in the top of the tube to the hi and low level marks?
cheers

Both dipsticks are exactly the same except for the shape of the handle. They give the same distance from the clip to the level marks.

Mick G investigated this recently in this thread.
lotus-twincam-f39/dipstick-height-update-t29992.html
My post of the Elan wsm gives 4.1" and 4.5" for the Mk1 and Mk2 engines respectively.
I can confirm Mick's findings and have changed my dipstick tube to the correct height of 4.5" - 4.1" inches is way low, even at the full mark let alone the empty! and is probably the reason I (we) suffer from loss of oil pressure on right handers.
Next time you change your oil, fill it with 4 litres rather than upto the mark.
