Engine level

PostPost by: john.p.clegg » Fri Dec 13, 2013 1:03 pm

Just a quickie, someone may know....I'm about to pull the engine for a little fettling...one of which is the dipstick level

The corners of the sump measure
Front right 29cm
Front left 29.5cm
Rear right 28.5cm
Rear left 29cm

so it looks like the sump rises back to front and right to left by 0.5 cm...ie. dipstick at high point

should the engine be level?

John

P.S. Only 3 hours to get a piece of history...

I think all engines slope down towards the rear a bit to get the crank C/L parallel to the diff pinion to optimise the driveline angles. Certainly the 2 seater has spacers below the gearbox mount to achieve the correct angle.

I don't think your left to right slope is significant as the angle of the tube in the front cover puts the full mark on the dipstick pretty close to the centre line of the sump where the oil level measurement won't be affected.

For what it's worth in my S4 the engine is level left to right and slopes down approx 1/2" towards the rear.
