Twink rubber half moons

PostPost by: Pistacchio sprint 72 » Sun Nov 10, 2013 12:09 pm

Hello,
While cleaning my engine, i passed my hand blindly behind the head and i could feel that the half moon on the carb side was not at its place.
It was in a bent postion pushed inside the head.
Of course it was oily...

So a cam cover removal is required. Where can i source good quality half moon please?

I used the ones found on VW Golfs, early 80s, I'm guessing. They have flanges on them so they're held (somewhat) in place. Just have to trim the flange on one of the rear ones.

I'm not sure Greg has got it correct there (sorry Greg) but I used to work for VW and as I remember it the Golf mk1 (Rabbit ??) seals did not fit, the Golf mk1 has this seal:

As I recall some of the Audi seals used to fit the TC but I cannot remember which....I think it was the old 2 litre engine or was it the five cylinder 2.2 :? but my memory is fading.....happy to be proved wrong though

That's the one! I remember bringing the half moon to a VW dealer and he matched it up to some he had. What he had, however, was a upper end kit which included other gaskets.

Wish I had a part number. Brian, what makes you think it won't work? Diameter?

Yes, it was the diameter as I recall.....but if it was too big or too small I cant remember although I have a feeling it was too large......used to have lots of those kicking about but alas all have long gone :( .....somebody with lots of money must buy one to find out for sure

These are what you need!

Long-life, non shrinking, never go soft or rubbery, self retaining, don't leak oil, never wear out, fit and forget, and should outlast the owner. I could go on and say aerospace aluminium, billet, blah blah, but it wouldn't be true.

I made this set about ten years ago and now I don't have to buy a set of the rubber ones every few years which IMHO seemed a daft thing to do for a non wearing part.

Greg,
I just had a quick scratch round and found a couple of VW seals, I suppose you could use them but they are a sloppy fit in the head due to a smaller diameter of the sealing part then the Lotus seal although the side "lips" are a larger diameter.
I probably never used them due to the smaller diameter.

Thanks Brian. I didn't realize there was a difference, albeit a small one; probably why I used them. They seemed tight probably because of the lips. Some RTV makes up the difference. I think the lips are a better seal than 'surface to surface' of the half moon to head seal. Mine haven't leaked in many years.

I only made the one set.

Two of them needed part of the retaining flange removing to clear part of the head casting.

Which are the dodgy pictures?
