82.55mm forged pistons

PostPost by: promotor » Sat Sep 14, 2013 8:45 am

I've been trying to get a response from JE Pistons regarding obtaining a set of standard size forged pistons with intruders from them and haven't got a response after numerous attempts.

Has anyone dealt with JE before ? Do you need an account with them or can you buy them privately?

Maybe someone knows of another company that can provide some off the shelf standard size forged pistons with intruders (to raise compression - normal flat top pistons AREN'T what I need)? Doesn't seem that Accralite or Cosworth do pistons in this size?

Any help much appreciated.

Cheers.

A few years ago I used Cambridge Motor sport to buy some bespoke JE pistons from. I see they are still agents for JE. http://www.cambridgemotorsport.com/
They were good to deal with.

Call us (JAE) or Dave Bean Engineering, Ray at RD. We've been doing these pistons for decades and have all the designs for just about every variation of bore/compression/rod length and stroke you can imagine.

I did work at JE/SRP a few years back, and things may well have changed a bit since then. They have just moved their HQ to Irvine, CA from Huntington Beach, and now all manufacturing is done in Ohio. In the past I have found them to be very responsive, customer oriented and deep into the advanced tech end of the piston market. It was work with race engine builders on piston ring float issues at v high rpm that drove them to require ring land flatness to be measured & produced by an extra order of magnitude in the millionths of an inch. Check phones & email addresses in case anything has changed.

It has always been possible to buy from them directly, but there was no price advantage to do this since they protect their Dealers pricing. The supposed advantage to do this would be to talk with one of their in-house guys directly, and be more certain that you got what you needed, or at least make yourself feel better about the process.

There are a number of other high performance piston companies, which also happen to be in the Greater L.A. area [although it is painful to use the term ?greater? and Los Angeles in the same thought]. One is Ross Pistons. This is a very different company from JE, but they are very good at what they do. Talk to ?Ric?. Both companies have a forging for the T.C. Ross is a smaller privately owned & operated business that has been around for many years and will take good care of you.

Arias is the original old line piston business that has developed a strong following in the import tuner/small bore market. Other options could be Wiseco in Ohio, U.S. or Mahle in Germany.

Any of the above can provide a high quality set of pistons for any requirement you would have. Jeff@Jae correctly notes above that any of the dealers can help source what you need. You just need to be very clear about what you are doing, what you need and what you expect. Be sure both parties understand what dimension the block & piston will be so that you are not trying to put 82.55 cans into 82.55 holes  . After the pistons are done, the machine shop can finish hone the block to the correct clearance recommended by the piston mfr, or selected by the owner by choice and at his peril.
just looking for clues at the scene....

Thanks Vernon (did I get you name right - I seem to remember speaking with you previously and the name seems right?), Dave, John, Jeff and Jay - all good leads and I will be looking into all of them. I may be able to sort some pistons through a local engine specialist - if that isn't successful then all of the details you guys have given me will definitely come in useful.
Can't believe how we don't really make many pistons here in the UK but those over in USA will be second to none I'm sure!
