Hello, quick question-
Can someone tell me what size leads I need to fit a 43D4 distributor cap please? The Magnecor options are 7mm, 8mm and 8.5mm...
Cheers

QED lists both 7 and 8.5 mm Magnecor lead sets for the 43D cap at their web site, I guess the choice is yours. I would have thought that 8.5 would be an awfully tight squeeze into the cap though.

I have Ngk resistance leads of 8mm & they fit ok, but there's not a lot of space to go bigger.

Having successfully used Magnecor leads on my other cars, I have recently fitted their leads to my Elan plus 2 which has a 25D4 distributor. I chose 8mm dia leads which will not fit the standard cap without modification. Magnecor supply a new modified DDB 101 cap as part of the kit. The leads were not fitted to the cap so that users can adjust the lengths to suit. I assume that the 43D distributor cap would require similar mods.

Thanks all,
I was curious as to why QED didn't list the 8mm. I think I'll stick with the 7mm to be on the safe side.
What is the presumed advantage of the thicker leads anyway?
Cheers

From what I understand from a distributor who I purchased a Flame Thrower Dizzy and a set of Magnecor wires, there is no difference. The specs on the 7mm and 8mm are identical, just the casing is larger. The 7mm only comes in black and the 8mm can be had in Blue or Red at additional cost. So I guess if you wanted a Red set of leads, you have to go with the larger diameter. I bought the 7mmm Black verison and they work fine.

The Lucas 23D and 43D caps are very different. The older 23D secures the high tension leads by cone-pointed set screws that pierce the insulation and burrow into the conductor. The later 43D requires the common brass ends that slip over the end of the high tension and then snap into the cap. The standard 23D cap does not allow anything much bigger than a 7 mm lead whereas the 43D is much more tolerant of varying lead diameter. At the QED web site you will see that the Magnecor lead sets for 23D distributors are supplied with a modified cap. The sets for the 43D cap are supplied as leads only, no need to modify the cap.
