Hi Eric,
Perhaps this topic on another forum might give you some inspiration http://www.miataturbo.net/race-prep-75/itt-we-will-discuss-swirl-pots-galore-67325/
I particularly like the design below, perhaps you could make something similar
(make sure you remove the contents first! )

They obviously haven't tested those. With that configuration, they'll need a much larger gas vent in the top, but still better than using the re-fried bean cans.
Okay, that wasn't very helpful... It really depends on whether your after originality or functionality. If it's the later your looking for there are numerous race parts suppliers that provide more generic swirl pots for less money than the R26 style design. Then there's fleaBay where you can find things like this that might work just fine but not look quite period correct.

If you have the right tools and a bit of Know how you can build your own.
But it is quicker to have the pros do it for you, and it will be right first
time.
You might want to watch this video.
How To Build A Custom Alloy Coolant Recovery Tank.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kzIE2s4Vees
Although it is for a Rad recovery tank, building a swirl
pot or surge tank wont be that much different.
Photo below shows PWR (Aust) alloy cross flow rad,
and rectangular shape surge tank on the left.
The round alloy recovery tank in front of the alloy
Rad is the recovery tank that we explain in the
video.
Just a few bucks worth of material and Bob's your
uncle.
Oh, I forgot about the cost. Near $200 for the surge
tank, and about $60.00 for the DIY recovery tank, but that
included $50.00 to have it TIG welded at the local sheet
metal shop.
Good luck.
