Head work.....

PostPost by: nomad » Tue Jan 08, 2013 6:31 am

I'd like advise on a good twin cam head man in the middle US. I believe my head could use seats, valves and guide's or at least someone knowledgeable to advise.

Mark has a guy that he has worked with before, maybe he'll chime in with the name.

Kurt I have several heads done with a local shop which have turned into a good freind relationship.
Great guys and good work, DR Engine and Machine 1578 6th Ave, Marion, Iowa 52302 319-377-5561

They have done four complete motors for me to date as far as the machine work, I do the builds.
They have a nice website also.

and you all believe the mechanics machine the heads an fit the seats by themselves??? They send the head out to be done by machine shops for truing and seat installation and then the valves are cut and lapped in when the assembly starts ---ed

Ed I hate to disagree with the last of your statement in my case, the machine shop that I work with does the seats, valves and then sets the clearances with the cams. All I get to do is bolt it back on the motor

That way if any issue with the head or set up it is there problem!

Thanks much for the input folks.
If Mark's had good luck with a guy right next to where my daughter lives I'm leaning that way.
My head has the valve number engraved on the head of the intakes and has obviously been worked before. Looks to me as if the exhaust's need to be replaced and new seats as well. Any idea what that work should cost on a twin cam??

Kurt,

I would give Randy a call at D&R as he can provide you a cost estimate. They just did one for Ernie in St Louis and can pull that cost for you.
They have done six TC heads for me to date and all good, from stock to highly modified. As a normal process we do valve guides, check seats
for depth and replace if needed, check all valves on stem wear and seal surface and again replace what is needed. This is all minimum requirements.

This would make a trip over worth the travel. You could also make two trips one to deliver and one to pickup if shipping is not an option.

A trip your way and checking out your "stable" at the same time might be happening soon, Mark! :D
I'll get a hold of Randy and have a talk. Thanks!

^^^What Mark said. Great guys to work with, they understand T/C head rebuilding requirements. I am very happy with the final product, see attached pics. When I received it it was ready to bolt on - cams installed, valves adjusted, etc.
