Camshafts

PostPost by: Matt Elan » Sun Sep 23, 2012 10:52 am

A couple of quick questions for the experts:
My Plus 2 parts book shows the inlet and exhaust camshafts with the same part number, D026 E 0351, so I infer that the inlet and exhaust camshafts are the same (assuming they are the same tpe, B, C or D) of course - is this correct?

And secondly from the various second hand heads I've got over the past months I have three 'C' type cams and one 'D' type cam - the D type was fitted on the exhaust side of one head. As the D type is the sprint form and slightly hotter than the S/E 'C' type I would have thought that if you get a power boost with that combination (and its a big if) 'D' type should be fitted on the inlet side?

Finally has anyone fitted a combination of 'C' and 'D' type cams to twink and if so which way round and was there any adavantage? :?:

I really must get out more :D :D :?: :?:

You are correct Matt, in that the camshafts are the same for the inlet and exhaust, on any twin cam, assuming they match in C, D, or whatever profile. It is the cam sprocket that has to be in the correct location, with the exhaust sprocket normally marked EX somewhere.

As for mixing the various types, as you say, I would have thought that a higher lift cam would be fitted on the inlet side, but I'm no expert, ......IN ANYTHING!

Yes putting the D type cam on the inlet with a C cam on the exhaust should be better than the other way around all other things being normal on the engine
