Oil to top of motor

PostPost by: tvacc » Mon Sep 03, 2012 1:07 am

Hi all,

Still working on this Elan. You all might remember this is the Elan that had the front bearing reveresed so no oil was getting to the top of the motor.

Rebuilt the motor. Have it back in the car. Used pre oiler to pump oil into the gauge galley. PPut vasoline in the pump. Got oil pressure with a few cranks. I was not geting oil pressure before I rebuilt, replaced the oil pump and put the bearing in the right way.

Cranked it a few times more, not much. How long should i wait to expect oil to the top of the motor? I did not pour oil into the top of the motor Ie the area where the cams are. I just poured it down the timing chain area while I had the cover off.

Should I pour a bit of oil into the camshaft area? How long should it take to get oil up to the top of the motor.

Have not started it yet, but getting ready to.

Tony,

It can take a little while ,say 30 seconds or so I would imagine to get oil up to the head if you are getting oil pressure within a few cranks it should reasonably quickly get upstairs OK.

Tony, mine took a loooonng time to get pressure. CaBC lister here suggested I pull the oil pressure line off the block and pump oil in the gallery. I pumped a lot in (about half of my oil can) and got pressure immediately. My guess is I was priming the pump with this method.

I understand that Tony V has oil pressure, in other words the pump had primed itself, he was just wondering how long it would take to get oil up to the cylinder head.

I like to fill the head areas where the cam lobes pick up a bit of oil and the buckets are oiled so at least this area is ok. Even If you fill via the cam cover the inlet side gets no oil in this area until it bleeds from the cam bearings.

If you have usede Graphogen, it is thick stuff and can take some time to "wash" away

Tony,

Poor some oil on both cams, close it up and start it up. You can then check after it is running that the cams are getting lubed through the filler cap or I also like to check the valve clearances once a motor has run for a few minutes.
