Other cars which you might fancy (non Lotus)

PostPost by: jono » Wed May 23, 2012 11:45 am

I will probably die now with a Lotus of some type in my garage however I still have many unscratched itches which I am yet to vigorously scarify. This is my unticked list of 'real world' wants in order of preference, what are your own :?:

1 A BWM 3.0 CSI (or a CSL in my dreams  )
2 Another MK1 Mini Cooper 1071S just like when I were a lad :( )
3 A Datsun 240Z (with out the rusted chassis). What a cracking, forgiving, car to drive.
4 A Mk1 Escort Mexico with an interesting lump (was drooling over a Duratec conversion at the weekend)
5 Porsche 911
6 Porsche 968
7 Fiat 500 Abarth
8 Audi Quattro Coupe (and Michelle Mouton  )
9 Lancia Fulvia HF
10 Renault Alpine (the original version)
11 Peugeot 205 1.6 GTI

...and probably loads more besides :P

Salut jono

Probably.

My realistic list is very short. I fancy a Caterham, though I'd have to go for a spin in one to make sure it's as fun as it looks.

After that finances come into play. I'd like to get a Mk1/2 Cooper for the wife, and if there wasn't enough change left over for a DHC Sprint I'd look at a Fiat X1/9. Other cars in this mid-category are Fiat 500 and Karman Ghia and a Midget as homage to my dad.

After that is the post-lottery-win selection of Elite Climax, Lotus Cortina Mk1, Esprit S1/2, Evora, Alpine A110, Lancia Stratos, Rochdale, Dino 246 and a V12 DHC E-type. Also on the list: 911, 356, DB 4/5/6, 300SL, and old Mustang, Gran Torino, Corvette and VW camper.

I know you said real-world, but you're not going to get a decent Alpine A110 for less than ?50k (number 10 on your list).

Vernon,
the lottery is mine ! look for the mid-category , then ...
My list includes a lot of those you and jono mentioned, one question to you is: 911, which from 1965 to 2012 ? 911 RS 2.7 (which is now on everyones list) ?
At present - at least in Spain - the SC, 3.2, 964 are quite cheap, direct result of the financial turmoil.
Aparte from an original Elite, a 993 Targa is what I most would like to drive now.
But one week ago I had a go in a Lola T70 Spyder, without windscreen, 5.8l V8, 500bhp in 920 kg.
Not a car for going shopping, but acceleration blows your head off, literally. Ears are still recovering.
Want one. needs lottery win or flourishing illegal business.
1964 S1 (in boxes)
1967 S3 DHC
1969 S4 FHC

Vernon,

I had a Caterham before my Plus 2 - 155bhp K powered De Dion with a 6 speed box on sticky Toyo semi slick tyres. The K is a much maligned and very underrated engine - way ahead of its time in many ways. No head gasket issues if properly built (liners 4 thou above face of block)

Brilliant fun but I got around 3 good drives a year out of it and once I had 'improved' it I got bored and wanted a challenge, and a real Lotus. Hence a 5 year nut and bolt rebuild fo a +2

I'd have to go with a Porsche 911SC, or an Alfa Romeo Duetto

1. Ferrari 275 GTB/4
2. Ferrari 365 GTB/4 Daytona
3. Lamborghini Muira P400SV
4. Ford GT40

No particular order to the list.

I'd like to own a race team, probably sport cars and something that I could go to LeMans with.

The PRIUS !
CAN YOU BELIEVE IT ?
It's the future and it's yours/ours. My wife and I have owned a hail storm dented and branch damaged 2005 Prius for three years. It's the third best car I've ever owned. I'm 61 and the other two are the Lotuses and Peugeot 505's. The Prius can u - turn in one way streets! Better turning radius than a Triumph Spitfire and NO scuttle shake !
I fancy the Prius and I'm ready for the rips.

Eric

ps; did someone say performance? Guess the zero to sixty and top speeds.
