Groovy Cams?

PostPost by: nebogipfel » Mon Oct 31, 2011 7:05 pm

Gentlemen,

I've done a search but am still unsure..

Following a conversation with my Plus 2 owning friend can someone clarify if there is a difference in profile between the camshafts fitted to Stromberg SE's and presumably Stomberg Plus 2's which appear to have one large groove and Big Valve/Sprint cams (which have 2)?

Having looked in the manuals we are now both confused.

It seems on the face of it that the differences between Stromberg SE and Sprint spec's are small and yet appear to give 25ish extra horses?

Makes us wonder where it all came from?

Thanks
John

John

There were 3 types of cam shaft - B, C, D & E!

B was the standard twin cam used in domestic and export Elans. It had no groove on it's timing chain end

C, which had one groove, was used on both S/E Elans and +2s, Federal Stromberg engines, standard Stromberg engines, Big Valve Stromberg Federal engines (as well as the E cam, see below!)

D, with two grooves, was used on the rare Super S/E UK S/E Weber engine, the Big Valve Weber & Dellorto engines for both Elan and +2, as well as in the S/E domestic Stromberg engines

The E was only used in the Federal Stromberg Elan Big Valve engine, so is a rarirty. It had no groove

Is that helpful? It's a real mish-mash and Wilkins has a good table in his Twin Cam book

Thanks Tim,

Yes the info is very contradictory, so it looks like you are confirming that the Stromberg SE cams are the same as Big Valve cams which was what we had sort of concluded. Or do you mean a Stromberg SE might have C or D cams?

I assume the E cam was to bring federal Sprints up to Weber/Dellorto equipped BHP?

I really must find a copy of Miles Wilkins.
