Oil change

PostPost by: rmd24 » Wed Sep 21, 2011 2:29 pm

My car is slightly overdue for an engine oil change at 5000 miles. I am using Millers Classic 20/50. Is an oil change needed at 3000 miles (according to the servicing schedule) when using this oil? Also I'd be keen to know any recommendations for gearbox oil, any decent EP80?

Roger.

P.S. Good weekend at the Circuit des Remparts at Angouleme last weekend. I was able to put faces to some of the forum user names!

Roger,
I am using Penrite Classic Light (20W60) which is probably much the same as the Millers oil. I have just changed the oil for the forth time since an engine rebuild. The first oil fill was with running-in oil. The second was with the Classic light and left in for 2000 miles. The third was left in for 3000 miles. When I drained the oil after 3000 miles, it appeared to be quite grotty, so have decided to settle on 2000 mile changes. Definitely wouldn't push it out to 5000. An overhaul is very expensive, clean oil is cheap insurance for a long life. I also have a Filtermag that I swap whenever I do a filter change. http://www.agriemach.com/product_info.p ... gum3poaqq0
I use Redline MTL in the gearbox as recommended by several posters.
Cheers,
Colin.

Millers "Classic" says it all. It's a dino oil same as was used when the car was designed so it requires frequent changes. I wouldn't go more than the recommended 3k miles (or one year, whichever comes first).

Thanks for the info. I used Millers Classic as a result of several recommendations when I bought the car. Is there a better alternative?

I have used Redline in a Caterham six speed box and the improvement was marked.

Is there not a new Millers 20/60 semi synth out now? Not checked it out yet but it sounds like a good choice if there is..

I'll keep my ears pinned... Listening out.

This one?

Can't see a direct reference to zddp, but presumably the following still applies:

"Competition" formulation for "long distance events" (as opposed to 3000 miles between oil changes?) but intended to be changed more frequently? After each event? What do you racing guys do?

Is there a tribologist in the house?

I use Millers CCS 20w/50 semi-synthetic - as recommended by the Matty mechanics.

Looks like it has been superseded by the CSS 20w60 maybe?:

Cheapest price I found was 37 quid for 5ltr so quite a bit more than the Classic 20W50 I've been using. Would the semi synth help the reduce tendency for my oil pressure to drop after spending an hour on the motorway in hot weather?

Robbie

Unless Brian is referring to Classic Sport (CS?) 20w50?

http://www.millersoils.net/1_Millers_frame_CLASSIC.htm

Confusing nomenclature..."C" for "Classic", or "C" for "Competition", or "CC" for "Classic Competition"....or is it me? Probably. If so, apologies.

No not funny. Elsewhere there's mention of looking over your shoulder in lieu of using rear view mirrors...not easy if it makes your eyes water! :(

Anyhoo...could you clarify. What oil have you actually ordered?

Competition 20/60 (Product name: CSS 20/60) **
OR
Classic Sport 20/50 (Product Name: Classic Sport 20w50)

(** Unless, as Robbie has pointed out, this has superceded a CSS 20/50. There is no CSS 20/50 currently listed on Millers' website)
