Same as previous reply except raise the rear wheels of the of the car 1 foot higher than the front. Makes the angle of the dangle much easier.

Brian,

Thanks for the photo, its really useful as I have to do this for the first time next week (I hope).

What are you using as a anchor point on the the exhaust side of the engine?

Now for the naive question, is it alright to put that much weight on the aluminum ports of the head?

Thx

Same thing- bloody foreigner.

Also raising the back end allows a bit more "swing room" for the tail-housing.

I put the sling under the thermostat housing on the exhaust side.

There's no strength issues lifting the complete assembly by the head, and the lift point on the exhaust side is under the thermostat housing.

The picture shows the complete engine and gearbox being removed from the car. This is not my normal practice as I usually remove the head first, but in this case the engine had done less that 1k miles and I didn't want to ruin an expensive Cometic head gasket.

It is also my normal practice installing the engine and gearbox to do so without the cylinder head in place - then I sling from the engine mounts.
I do this because I always seem to be messing with the exhaust when the engine is out, and its a lot more convenient to put the manifolds in from the top which cannot be done with the head in place.
