Weight of a Twin Cam Head

PostPost by: billwill » Tue May 31, 2011 2:00 pm

Has anyone got a bare Lotus Twin Cam Head and a weighing machine on hand.

I'd like to know the weight for scrap value purposes. My own poor broken head is not with me at the moment.

Bill

Don't scrap it yet,it could make you a quid or two.....the idea is this....get your local macine shop to put it under the power hacksaw and section it....I wouldn't mind a section...other tuners also...just to see the inlet and exhaust tracts???

Another member has had a thought about uses for old busted heads, I'm just trying to work out a fair price to charge for it.

Bill,
I have my head stripped at the moment. Happy to weigh it for you tomorrow using bathroom scales once "her indoors" has gone to work........

A die cast head is 15 kg with guides, valve seats, studs, caps and core plugs, no valves.

Thank you.

Interesting, I had the mental impression from memory that it was heavier than the 19Kg Differential (that I have been handling recently).

I guess that is just because it takes such a heck of a pull to lift it off the block if the gaskets have stuck a bit.

So, getting back to the weight of a Twink Head (complete with cams, sprockets & cover) and packed for transport - will it come in under 20kg most of the time?

Any transport experts out there with a tip on which transport crowd to use in sending a head on a slow boat Down Under from the UK??

I recently sent some bare stromberg heads to the USA for modification - weight packed was 23kg in a carboard box with foam filling and wooden plywood boards bolted top and bottom and fitted also to the sides to protect from damage.

The volume basis for airfreight is generally higher than actual weight basis so get a quote based on volume of the box and keep this as small as possible as this is what they will normally end up charge you for unless you are shipping lead ingots :D

I used DHL becasue my wifes business has an account with them. But worth testing Australia Post, DHL, UPS, Fedex to see who gives you the best deal if shipping anything internationally.
