Millers Semi Synthetic....

Is anyone running Millers Semi Synthetic oil in their engines? Is it recommended?

Using Millers CSS 20w60 semi-synthetic from their Motorsport range.
Road use only but modified engine

Hi Mark,

I am running Millers Classic Sport 20W/50 which is a semi-synthetic. I find it excellent. Good oil pressure even when engine very hot (though I do have an oil cooler) and not too expensive. Oil usage about 600 miles per pint (but very little leakage) on newly rebuilt engine (4000 miles ago).

Nothing to complain about at all except perhaps availability. My local motor factor orders it in specially for me.

I would like to use a 20/60 oil. Can you just change from mineral or would you have to flush etc?

I have used millers for 4 years in my twinc no problems at all,touch wood! Terry i changed from mineral,simply drained ,new filter and refilled with semi syn all has been well.

Thanks Ian that is really kind but I am not due for an oil change until Christmas so October half term is fine ...I also need a filter and some more bits from Susan.

I have an oil temp gauge fitted and the oil temp rockets upwards when the engine is being used hard, such as autobahns and mountain passes. The temp gauge scale goes to 140 DegC and the needle goes above that when the engine is being used hard, so I chose an oil that can take the punishment.

Hi Jeremy,

A temperature gauge is a handy thing to fit but I'm a bit alarmed about the 140?C readings you've noted.
140?C is not critical but it is extremely high.
From experience I would expect temperatures of that magnitude only at sustained very high engine revs.
Engine oil temperature is strongly related to engine speed & high temperatures should be anticipated on high speed Autobahn runs.
Are you sure that the temperature also rises as high on mountain passes?
When hill climbing the regular gear changes usually keep the oil temperature down but not necessarily the coolant temperature.
If you are certain that the gauge is reading accurately I think that you should be investigating the reason for such high temperatures.

I'm punching in the dark here but I suspect that you may be overfilling your engine with oil?
If the level of oil in the oil pan/sump is too high the crankshaft & con-rod big ends will make contact with the oil (punching/thrashing) which imparts energy = heat into the oil which can cause a dramatic rise in temperature.

Apologies if I've done the Granny sucking Eggs thing :oops:
