Fan belt & oil filter

PostPost by: saildrive2001 » Mon May 02, 2011 2:34 pm

Getting close to starting up my engine prior to mounting the body on the chassis. Can anyone help with some North American part #s for the fan belt & the oil filter. My filter body is the original which requires the seperate filter element. Napa & our Canadian Tire stores don't have any fan belts that fit. I got a filter from Napa but it has steel ends & I think the original had rubber sealing rings at either end.

I use the MOTORMASTER 17-1883-4 spin on filters =guaranteed to jump higher, swim farther and come out dryer! -----as for the belt l go to a parts store and have it looked up as the numbers have disappeared from mine--there are 2 one for the alternator [smaller ] and one for the generator larger] -- belt specs are -------- type 40 degree v width 3/8 in. length [approx ] 29 inches Gates or Goodyear -buy 2 so you have one for the breakage that happens at 2 am just north of Barrie -[ but if there is no spare it is a good way to get the girl friends panty hose off to use as an emergency belt ]----ed

Hi Ed, I have the older cartridge style oil filter not the spin on type.
Neither NAPA, Canadian Tire or Partsource carry 3/8" wide belts that long. Thanks for confirming what I thought about the length for use with a generator. What parts store did you get yours at?

Std V belts are available in the length you will need from any transmission specialists For E.G. Bearing services in this country. V easy to get and Sue miller has both the parts in stock. If you ring here she will give you the numbers I am sure.

Both Fram and Cooper make the filters (steel both ends with gaskets attached)

I have measured the belt length for you. Ask for a belt from 785mm -800mm long B section / V shape. 3/8'' as Ed says..

If you have Brown Brothers outlets try them with number PWRPCFB788.... 788 IS THE LENGTH. ''B'' is the V form ref'.. You should have no difficulties at all getting this std v belt. Best to use the 'notched' type for more flexibility and less load on the pump bearing. AND.. DO NOT OVERTIGHTEN...

If you get stuck I have a few spares and I will send you one for the cost of the postage.

Let us know if you draw a blank with the filter number and we can sort that for you. (I'll get one and send it if your stuck)

Thanks Alex for the info, do you have a part # for the Fram filter?
I will go to a local co. that sells belts & hydraulics & try to get one that matches the sizes you gave me. Thanks for the reminder about the belt tension but having had the car for 42 years I am very aware not to use too much tension.
Do you know what company manufactures the "notched" belts?

Keith,

The oil pump you have is as shown on the RDENT website http://www.rdent.com/manuals/index.html
I'm sure that is a good source for a filter. Probably a fan belt as well.

The PWR number above is a high flex (notched) belt...

Look on the Fram website. Pre cross flow 1500 Ford engines.. Cortina's etc. Replaceable element filters

Sorry for the late reply.

I got a Fram part # from Steve at SJ Sportscars in the UK. #CH2804 but I can't find it on the Fram site. Can anyone confirm that the # is correct? Still looking for a source in Canada.

Hi Keith,

I used a NAPA XL 25 7300 belt 25/64 x 30 5/8 lg ( 780mm) - this is after trying several as stock pickings are few at that size range and not surprisingly a slight difference in width changes the length requirement significantly. (Edit: Since a close fit I removed the water pump pulley, fit belt over then bolted back on, isn't too tight when installed but didn't have enough adjustment to fit othewise - didn't want to muscle it on!, next stock size up was way too big).
For a filter element, after giving the chap every similar car year and make to try to find a listing, and the CH2804 old no. (now obsolete he said) he managed to find and equivalent CH814PL but he had to order in (arr. next day) this was at Parts Source. It is for the longer version filter can, has cork end bits instead of rubber, but otherwise similar size.
I did notice however in my estimation that if the cork is compressed it could come close to the relief valve on the pump, so just in case I cleared the cork a bit there (it seals near the centre.)
If anyone has a better north american available part no. I would be interested also.
Cheers,
Jack
