hi,
I have a +2 fitted with a 1600 cross flow engine, the wiring for the rev counter in the engine bay is disconnected and i can`t see where they should be connected. i am assuming there must be a sensor on the crank. where can i get the kit from? also i have fitted electronic ignition and will have to adjust the original tacho or buy another one, any recommendations?

The rev counter, if original, is pulsed by the ignition wire feeding the coil. It runs behind the tach directly from the ignition switch and there are no other connections from the engine compartment- At least with the original distributor and points system.
That can change with an electronic ignition. Depends on what you have. Generally electronic ignition and the original tachs don't work that well together.
You can convert your old tach to be compatible with electronic ignition. Several places do it - depends on where you are located

hi.
apologies for the lack of information, the car is a1968 +2, i have three rev counters two positive and one negative earth. thanks for the replies, there is a lead in the coil area which is disconnected. it is labeled rev counter so that's a start.
i have posted before on the +2 forum, concerning fitting a zetec engine, i have decided to keep the cross-flow for now.
i live in Chester, i have seen a yellow +2 driving into the zoo employees car park but have not managed to speak to the driver.

Is your car positive or negative earth? If you are running an alternator, then it should be negative earth.
Now, is your tacho an RVC or RVI type (look for the tiny writing on the face)? The wiring is different for each.
Once you tell us this, we are off to the races!

hi fellas,
the rev counter is an rv1 2402/04 positive earth. i have a dynamo fitted. on another topic can anyone recommend an exhaust system supplier. the engine block is a 6911m 1600cc, it has the standard cast exhaust manifold and a 1.5 inch stainless exhaust system, i want the engine to breath as well as possible and a new system will help.
thanks. keith

Then M750rider's reponse is correct. The ignition wire runs from the ignition switch through a loop on the back of the rev counter and then to the coil and then to the distributer points. There is no extra wiring for the rev counter in the engine bay.
The rev counter is fed with 12v for it to work - but that is behind the dash. It sounds that the rev counter or its wiring is the problem.
Good luck

Your rev counter may have been modified already - it would normally have a sticker or writing on the case which you can see when you take it out.
If it has not been, you can either send it to the usual instrument repairers or do it yourself. If the latter, here is a reasonable article:

It's odd but I can't remember getting my rev counter converted when I went negative earth. It was a sod of a long time ago
I remember repolarising the dynamo.
I must have converted the rev counter myself without thinking twice about it. (I have done lots of electronics). I think it just involves opening the case and swapping the positive & negative feed from the can to the circuit board.
