Engine with a hole.

PostPost by: kerryblu » Fri Oct 29, 2010 8:18 pm

Hi all,
Just got the engine back this week, painted it, then trial fitted all the parts, but there was one hole 1/2 an inch wide left of the strongburg carb the rear one, no threads in its bore just smooth sides, dose anybody know what gose in there or what it is for?
One more question, how dose the air intake grill for the heater on the front shuttle fix to the body?
Hope to put her on the road 1st of Jan.

Cheers Gerald.

A pic would help. On my Weber head, there is a hole in the head about where you describe, and a hose extends from there to the airbox for "consumption" of fumes.

And, again on mine, the air intake grill has four "finger" projections that fit into holes in the body.

Gerald, as Jim mentions, if I understand the location correctly that is the hole for the breather hose. The hose goes from the engine into the airbox, or alternatively you can fit a filter on it (for instance if you are fitting aftermarket air filters). And yes, there is no thread in it, but there is a pipe which pushes in, onto which a hose fits. It's an attempt at reducing emissions and form a "closed loop system" by sending gases back into the airbox to be burned again.

Hi,
If I thought about it I should have said I've got a hole in my head.
Now with your info, I now understand what its for.
But on my grill for the heater intake there is no studs, though the P/O recromed it.

thanks for your help.

There should be a corresponding hole in the back of the Stromberg air box - bottom left as it sits on the carbs. The pipe that goes between the two is about 1/2"' id and has a slight bend, roughly half way along to line the holes up. It also has a locating lug that goes into a cut out on the side of the airbox to locate it and some sort of brass gauze filter inside the pipe (a flame trap?). Mine just jams between the airbox and the head with a couple of rubber seals at each end (I'm using 'O' rings for that).

Re the air intake grill, on mine there are two small holes (about 3mm, 1/8") at each end of the aperture and corresponding small projections from the grill. It fits with a bit of wiggling but rattles so I used a little bit of clear silicone to hold it in place.

Glad to help. I should also mention that the "hole" in the head is fitted with a special grommet and the "hose" that extends to the airbox is actually a metal tube that fits into the grommet.

You can see all this in Figure 15, page 34, of Section L in the workshop manual.
