Refit sump in S4

I have, for the first time, removed the sump on an s4 in situ. Replacing it has proved a problem insofar as the cork semi circular seals extend substantially beyond the section in the sump. Is it normal to have to trim these to size and if so should they be trimmed flush with the sump to crankcase joint face?

The cork semi circular gaskets that fit in the grooved carriers at each end of the crank are designed to extend outside the groove by about 4mm and to be compressed when the sump is fitted. The ends of the semi circular cork gaskets sometimes need to be trimmed to properly mated up with the small tab in the side flat gaskets that fits in the groove at its ends, a very small dab of silicone sealant where the 2 gaskets join ensure no leak path between them.
Holding the semicircular Gaskets in place when refitting the sump in situ can be a challenge, especially the rear one as it is easy to knock out of its groove and access to it is hard when the supm is fitted to see if its fitted correctly. Making up a semicircular wooden block to form the gasket to shape and partially compress it and then sticking it in the groove with a gasket adhesive and holding it in place with the block while the adhesive sets helps before fitting the sump
