fitting a zetec engine

hi

i am in the process of buying a 2+2, unfortunately it has a ford 1500 gt cross flow engine fitted. the original engine was removed because it blew up!

i have no wish to upset any purists among you guys, but i am thinking of fitting a zetec unit, the car has an original spec newish chassis.

are there any alterations to make to the chassis,or any thing else,to achieve the swap?

Keith, it's mostly all covered in this forum. At least 10 of us have been down this route in a variety of different ways. Check out the search results, then fire off the detailed queries. The good thing is that the Zetec will fit and mounts up to a Ford 4 cylinder gearbox with the same bolt pattern on the bell-housing as the LTC.
Presumed you have looked at the Raceline and/or Dunnel websites: these give a general idea of the engine dress mods for North/South mounting.

Hi Kieth,

welcome to the mad house. If you stick with all of the original transmission & Chassis the job shouldn't be too difficult. Spyder will be able to provide you with engine mounts but their Exhaust manifold is designed to fit with their Space frame which doesn't take up so much space next to the engine.
Yes the chassis will need a half Moon cut out in the front cross Member to make space for the torsional Vibration Damper which is part of the Zetec front Pulley. Beware there will be Petrol or Petrol Fumes in there.
There are lots of little snags that will need working on & you'll need to budget for them.
e.g. Do you already have a pair of Weber Carbs or will you go down the Injection route, just a rhetorical question.
There is as such no information page on here & so many people have sent posts on this subject over the years.
I did a similar conversion in an S4 & have written a fair bit on this Forum on the subject.
It may reduce your search a bit if you comb through my Posts for a start.

Keith, to add to John's reply: some of the Zetec stuff is related to dressing the engine ready for its use in a North South mounting and running it presumably without the donor induction and engine management stuff. Other issues are specific to the Lotus Elan installation. It's useful to distinguish because there are lots of companies who provide parts and solutions to installation of Zetecs in rear wheel drive sports and kitcars.

If you want detailed help, it's best if you describe what engine you have bought, what gearbox you are using, what chassis you have, do you want injection or carbs etc etc. Ie, if you start the ball rolling, we can provide some tips, photos etc.

Keith, a good place to start is the actual Zetec engine itself. Most people opt for the 2 litre. I have a Blacktop engine designed for a Focus: Ford were selling these a couple of years ago for a knockdown price. Others have the older Silvertop engine. These are actually slightly easier to install but getting one in good condition without bore wear will now be geting a little harder. The last of these was new about 1997.
