Sump Bolt sizes

Dear All
Just removed my sump in-situ to check the crankshaft endfloat (10 thou?),also found the teeth on the starter pinion a bit chewed (fixed) but the question is that there are three bolts (or allen screws in my case) that are shorter than the rest, anyone know where these short screws fit or do I have to contort myself again to find out?
Thanks
John

Hi John,
My guess is the 3 short ones go on RHS of the block towards the rear where the holes are blind, all the other holes in the block are drilled right through so the length of the bolt will not matter.
I think that originally the majority the bolts (or more properly set screws) were the same (short) length apart from the 4 which go into the timing chest at the front and the oil seal carrier at the rear which were longer.
For what it's worth the workshop manual quotes end float as .003/.008"
Regards,

John,
What were the symptoms that made you want to check the end float?

I understand - your sensing off the flywheel. I guess I would not notice such a thing sensing off the front pulley.
What is the normal gap setting - I would not have thought ?5 thou would not have made any difference.
I will send a PM.
