correct tranny oil

I recently rebuilt a Triumph Vitesse differential. I was cautioned to use the "GL4" rated lubricant as the "GL-5" grade will destroy the copper shims.

I just finished rebuilding a Cortina trans similar to that as used in Elans and Elan +2's. The thrust washers for the lay shaft are bronze or copper and I was wondering if a "GL-5" lubricant will be harmful?

I used the Red Line GL-5 rated in my +2 transmission.

The high sulphur levels in GL-5 lubricants to meet the anti scuff specification can lead to corrosion of brass componentsovertime especially if the specific brass component sees high friction levels and high tmeperatures such as brass synchro rings or thrust washers

The right oil for the plus 2 gearbox is Redline MTL which is a GL4 rated lubricant which has low sulphur levels due to the lower anti scuff specification for a GL-4 oil. The GL-5 rated Redline gear oil should only be used in the diff. The hypoid gears in the Lotus / Ford diff have a sliding interface between the crown wheel and pinion and thus require GL-5 oils to prevent the scuffing of the sliding surfaces

Redline Gl-5 has lower sulphur levels than most GL-5 oils (you can tell just by smelling it!) so even if used with Brass components its corrossion rates are greatley reduced.
