oil temp sensor

I want to install a oil temp sensor and bought a smith gauge with sensor.
the sensor is screwed into a adapter plug that srews into the sump.
does any one know what the tread size is of the sump? is it 5/8 UNF?
the sensor tread is 3/8 I believe.
I would hope to use the sump plug to mount the sensor but I can not find the right adapter plug so do I have to fit it some where else in the sump and if so what is the best place?
I see that VDO has some oil sensors for sale on ebay that screw straight into the sump but that is M14 / 1.5 and that sounds not right for our engine?
And would a VDO sensor be caompatable with a smith gauge? probabaly not.
Any thoughts on thus subject would be appreciated.
cheers

At 77 the lifetime warranty period could be fairly brief
