Oil filler cap - fitting wire?

PostPost by: jono » Thu Oct 15, 2009 1:24 pm

I have made a new wire to secure the cap to one of the cam cover studs as there was none before.

Does anyone know how to secure it to the cap? The cap appears to be in 2 sections but I can't seem to see how they are separated :?

Cheers, Jono

Jono

Someone told me that you just bend the wire back (to put a barb in it?) and then just feed it into the hole...

Jono,

Flip the cap over and look at it. The chrome part of the cap is bent around the inner part in 3 places. You have to carefully unbend the chrome part to release the inner part. You may get away with unbending it in one place only and the inner part should come out. Be careful not to damage the chrome part because as I understand it these caps are practically impossible to find and if you are lucky enough to find one, you'll pay dearly for it. Good luck.

It's been twenty years since I fixed mine so its possible I'm remembering this wrong, but is there a hole from the underside of the cap that you could feed a crimped cable through (such as a bicycle shifter cable). Then you would need to attach a tab to the other end for the stud connection end.

Thanks guys,

I managed to uncrimp the stainless cap, fit the wire and carefully re crimp. I found the old wire and lead nipple inside!

I used a stainless bike shifter cable with integral nipple and all looks well.

Cheers.

You can get "very rare" NOS bits of wire on Ebay, if the oriiginality of your bike cable bothers you :)

Hi Everyone

I believe the caps are available new too, I just cant remember where I've seen them (maybe Burtons). What they don't have however is the retaining wire.

Dear All
After reading the posts above, decided to fit the holding wire in my cap.....yes,you can prise the inner out of the outer and a ferrule crimped on the end finishes the job...

Thanks

Silver solder end of wire with micro torch flame so just fit the hole feed into hole reheat the wire and scrape upwards to form a ridge.

I'm quite curious about this Burton cap as I've been seeing it on ebay for a while. It's machined alloy, so am I right in assuming it would be much thicker and therefore difficult to drill and fit a wire to it? It looks great, I must admit, but I wish someone would remake the pressed ones, as original.

I have a spare one of those 3-point caps, good condition, if anyone wants one. It has the hole for the wire, but not the wire itself. I'm not after silly ebay money for it, so make me a reasonable offer via PM if you're interested.
